We're Empowering People & Strengthening Democracy:

Speaking Up for Election Integrity

Democracy NC is leading the campaign to help NC elections run smoothly in 2012. We're asking legislators to unlock a bank account with $4 million for things like opening more early voting sites, training poll workers, and maintaining voting machines. The funds are from the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) but NC cannot access the money until state legislators release $660,000 in matching funds to the NC Board of Elections. A bipartisan group of election officials from more than 85 counties has asked legislators to release the money. Join them by asking Speaker Tillis and Senate President Berger to release the HAVA funds for fair, secure elections in 2012.

Protecting the Vote

With your help, Democracy NC has been able to prevent conservative NC legislators from passing several measures that would suppress voter participation, including a voter photo ID bill and the repeal of Same-Day Registration. In 2012, we'll continue to protect the vote and we need your help. Sign up for voting rights email alerts and stay tuned –we'll contact you when it's time to act!

You can learn more about the photo ID controversy and related legislation on our Voter ID action page.

Support Fair Elections and Fair Courts

Tax season is almost over and if you haven't done your taxes yet, don't forget that you can say "YES" to fair courts and fair elections by checking a box on your NC tax form. Look for the question about the NC Public Campaign Fund and mark "Yes." The fund provides a Judicial Voter Guide that profiles candidates running for N.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. It also provides limited public financing to candidates for those offices who accept strict fund-raising and spending limits. Checking the box does not change your tax bill or tax refund in any way; it just transfers $3 into the Public Campaign Fund from what you pay anyway.

Help Protect Voting Rights in North Carolina!

July 2011 Voting Rights Rally Group

Just days from the end of the 2011 first session, Republican leaders in the NC General Assembly unveiled a sweeping 44-page anti-voting bill that would rewrite NC’s election laws. Senate Bill 47 would repeal Same-Day Registration in North Carolina, ban straight-ticket voting, shorten Early Voting by a week, end Sunday voting and much more. Learn more here, including what you can do about it, and sign up for our voting rights action alerts. Help fight attempts to roll back voting rights for millions of North Carolinians.

Thank Governor Perdue for her veto of the Voter Photo ID Bill.
