Volunteer with Democracy North Carolina
Our effectiveness is amplified by a statewide network of individual volunteers called "Democracy Advocates."
Democracy North Carolina depends on volunteers called Democracy Advocates to promote our goals, spread the word about our activities and contact their representatives, when needed, to support the passage of legislation.
Our Advocates also help us get out the vote and educate voters on their rights at election time while keeping us informed on local issues important to their communities.
A Powerful Force
The well-focused efforts of our Advocates helped us win Same Day Registration & Voting, public campaign financing programs for statewide judicial and Council of State races, and other achievements. Our Democracy Advocates also:
- Support our legislative agenda by making phone calls, writing letters to their representatives and meeting with their legislators about our priority issues.
- Write letters to the editors of on-line and print media.
- Invite Democracy NC speakers to meetings of their organizations.
- Distribute educational flyers about our initiatives and our core issues.
- Volunteer at our headquarters in Durham, helping us with data entry, phone banking, communications projects and other tasks.
- Make tax-deductible contributions to support our work.
Our Democracy Advocates come from every county in North Carolina, include people from all age groups, backgrounds and political affiliations and vary widely in the amount of time they can give to Democracy NC. But they are all making a difference in the vitality of democracy in our state and we are grateful to all of them for their help. How to Become a Democracy Advocate
Becoming a Democracy Advocate costs nothing – all you have to do is sign up for our Advocate newsletter and take action when requested, if your schedule allows. Or, if your time is limited and you prefer to give money, you can make a financial contribution. To become a Democracy Advocate, you can also contact our office at 919-286-6000 or email info@democracy-nc.org.
As a Democracy Advocate, you will receive:
- Regular updates and action alerts encouraging you to take action on issues vital to the future of democracy in North Carolina.
- Advance notice of new research reports on such issues as political action committee and industry contributions to candidate campaigns; voter participation details; results of corruption investigations; and upcoming events.
- Invitations to skill-building workshops and other events.
- The satisfaction of knowing you’re improving democracy in your community, step-by-step.
Committed to the Cause?

One of our priorities over the next few years is to build a special corps of exceptionally dedicated Democracy Advocates to serve as our representatives in communities where we lack a local coalition. These Advocate Organizers will receive special training that deepens their understanding of our issues and teaches them how to:
- Communicate our messages effectively.
- Be dynamic advocates for our issues.
- Recruit or organize others to bring about voter participation and policy change.
If you share our vision for North Carolina and are interested in helping us increase voter participation, promote fair elections and train new leaders for the future, you may want to become an Advocate Organizer. Contact our Head Organizer Adam Sotak for more information at 919-286-6000, Ext. 11.
